Smarter Satellites Track Hidden Air Pollution

A new satellite-based framework has made it possible to reconstruct seamless daily global maps of atmospheric formaldehyde (HCHO), a key tracer of reactive volatile organic compounds (VOCs), from noisy and fragmented observations. By combining physical spectral retrieval with artificial intelligence (AI), the method greatly improves data continuity and accuracy, captures wildfire plumes and industrial hotspots, and opens a practical route toward high-frequency global air pollution monitoring.
