Hydrogen peroxide is a widely used chemical essential to water treatment, disinfection, and green manufacturing, yet its conventional production relies on energy-intensive and centralized processes. Recent research highlights an emerging electrochemical route that generates hydrogen peroxide directly from oxygen and water under ambient conditions. Central to this approach is the use of noble metal-free single-atom electrocatalysts, where isolated metal atoms embedded in nitrogen-doped carbon precisely steer oxygen reduction toward the desired two-electron pathway. By combining atomic-scale catalyst design with advanced reactor engineering, this strategy offers a cleaner, safer, and more flexible way to produce hydrogen peroxide on demand, opening new possibilities for decentralized and sustainable chemical manufacturing.

A clearer pulse signal could mean earlier warning before danger strikes. This study introduces an interfacial engineered triboelectric sensor (IETS) designed to capture weak arterial pulse waves even when a wearable device is pressed tightly against the skin. By improving how stress is transferred across the sensor-skin interface, the device preserves fine pulse-wave details that are often lost in conventional wearables. Integrated with machine learning, the system turns those signals into real-time assessments of cardiovascular condition and fatigue state. The work points to a more practical path for wearable warning systems that could help reduce fatigue-related driving risks and support everyday cardiovascular monitoring.

A recent study has demonstrated the power of metabolic engineering in enhancing the antitumor activity of chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) macrophages (CAR-Ms) in solid tumors. By overexpressing the glutamine transporter SLC38A2, researchers successfully reprogrammed the glutamine utilization pathway in CAR-Ms, significantly improving their anti-tumor activity against HER2-positive breast cancer cells. This metabolic reprogramming enhanced macrophage effector functions, including phagocytosis and cytokine production, thus boosting the overall immune response within the tumor microenvironment (TME). These findings suggest that integrating metabolic strategies with immunotherapy can provide a new avenue for improving CAR-M-based treatments in solid tumors.

Sulfamethoxazole (SMX) is a widely distributed antibiotic that poses significant ecological risks in aquatic environments. Constructed wetlands, essential for pollutant removal, rely on microbial communities for biogeochemical transformations. This study reveals how positive bacteria-phage interactions improve SMX removal in these systems. The addition of phage-concentrated solutions (PCS) increased SMX removal efficiency by up to 35%. Phages enrich SMX-degrading bacteria and enhance their metabolic capacity through auxiliary metabolic genes (AMGs). Notably, lytic viruses reduce the spread of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) by lysing antibiotic-resistant bacterial cells. These findings highlight the ecological role of viruses in bioremediation and antibiotic resistance management.

Understanding the Sun's active regions is crucial for predicting space weather, but scientists have historically lacked continuous, detailed measurements of the Sun's hidden far side. New research by a team of scientists led by the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) National Solar Observatory have developed a novel approach to estimate the magnetic configuration of these hidden regions using helioseismic data (sound waves within the Sun). The method relies on crucial helioseismic data including measurements from the NSF-NOAA Global Oscillation Network Group (NSF-NOAA GONG), operated by NSO with support from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). This breakthrough paves the way for a more complete, full-Sun map of magnetic activity when combined with observations of the front-side to improve simulations of the solar environment and help forecasters anticipate potentially hazardous solar events.

Turning seawater into freshwater often creates a second crisis: hypersaline brine that is expensive to handle and risky to release back into the environment. The new study presents a material designed to ease both problems at once. It combines strong sunlight harvesting with built-in heat storage, allowing evaporation to continue after illumination drops. This phase-change photothermal foam achieved 95% solar absorption, sustained high evaporation under one-sun conditions, and kept working even in darkness. Just as importantly, it remained effective in highly saline water without visible salt buildup, pointing to a more practical route for continuous solar desalination and brine reduction.

Human cognition relies on the seamless integration of multiple senses, allowing the brain to associate, infer, and even imagine across modalities. Replicating this capability in artificial systems has long remained a challenge, particularly under strict energy constraints. This study presents a bioinspired multisensory framework that integrates vision, touch, hearing, smell, and taste within a self-powered architecture. By enabling cross-modal association and adaptive reconfiguration, the system allows one sensory input--such as touch or sound--to trigger corresponding representations in other sensory domains. Beyond conventional recognition, the framework demonstrates higher-level cognitive functions, including inference and generative pattern creation. These advances point toward a new generation of intelligent machines capable of human-like perception and cognition.

Millions of tonnes of plastic waste accumulate in landfills and oceans every year. One promising response is to engineer microbes to break the plastic down into useful chemical building blocks. However, teaching a bacterium to digest plastic efficiently demands fine-tuning not just one gene, but entire clusters of genes working in concert, like upgrading every machine on a factory assembly line rather than swapping out a single part.
A new platform developed by researchers from the National University of Singapore (NUS) could make that possible. Called Lytic Selection and Evolution (LySE), the system harnesses a modified bacteriophage -- a virus that infects bacteria -- to rapidly create and test many small genetic changes. It can improve long stretches of DNA (up to about 40,000 DNA letters), big enough to include most sets of genes needed for important chemical processes in cells.

Magnons are tiny waves in magnetisation and ideal building blocks for hybrid quantum systems and quantum metrology. However, their previously too-short lifetime of at most a few hundred nanoseconds has been a hurdle. An international team of physicists led by Andrii Chumak from the University of Vienna has now succeeded in extending this lifetime a hundredfold to up to 18 microseconds - paving the way for a quantum computer the size of a 1-cent coin. The scientists have also made the crucial discovery that it is not a fundamental law of physics that governs the lifetime of magnons, but rather a question of materials. The study has recently been published in the prestigious journal Science Advances.

Plants use sunlight to convert water and carbon dioxide into energy-rich sugars and oxygen in various ways (photosynthesis). Drought is a major challenge in this process. A research team led by Wolfram Weckwerth at the University of Vienna has now demonstrated how a particularly water-efficient variant of this process (CAM) has evolved in diverse ways within a single tropical tree genus. By analysing the genomes of three species of the genus Clusia, the researchers were able to trace how genome duplication and subsequent genetic rearrangement contribute to the diversity of different CAM traits. The findings have recently been published in Nature Communications.

Human childbirth is commonly viewed as uniquely difficult and dangerous. The reason: the combination of bipedalism and large brains creates a tight fit between the baby and the birth canal. Research at the University of Vienna has now shown that many other mammals - from domestic livestock to wild species - face similar birth problems and mortality. In some species, these complications even occur as often as in some human populations, such as hunter-gatherers without modern medical care. The findings suggest that difficult childbirth is not uniquely human. The study was published in Biological Reviews.

Scientists have developed two new covalent organic frameworks (COFs) that efficiently produce hydrogen peroxide -- a valuable chemical and potential solar fuel -- using only water, oxygen, and visible light. By carefully tuning the molecular connectivity of an electron-deficient building block called benzobisthiazole (BT), the team created two regioisomeric COFs with distinctly different photocatalytic activities. The better-performing framework achieved a hydrogen peroxide production rate of 1638 μmol(mid dot)g⁻¹(mid dot)h⁻¹ in pure water under visible light, outperforming its structural isomer by about 57%. This work demonstrates that precise control over molecular topology can dramatically boost photocatalytic efficiency.
