OpenAI commits $234 million for first overseas applied AI lab in Singapore
OpenAI is opening its first applied AI lab outside of the United States in Singapore. The announcement was made Wednesday by the city-state's Ministry of Digital Development and Information as part of a multiyear partnership with the local government to support Singapore's artificial intelligence ambitions.
The company has committed S$300 million, approximately $235 million, to the initiative and plans to ramp up its staffing in the city-state to about 200 people.
The collaboration, titled "OpenAI for Singapore," is designed to strengthen the country's position as a leading hub for applied, AI-native innovation. The lab's work will be aligned with Singapore's priorities regarding digital infrastructure, healthcare, finance, and the public sector.
This move is part of a broader effort to accelerate AI deployment. In addition to the agreement with OpenAI, Singapore has signed partnerships with Google to further strengthen its position as a global AI hub.
