Labor minister mediates Samsung union talks as workers set to strike
Samsung Electronics and its largest labor union have failed to reach a last-minute deal regarding wages and bonus payouts.
In an effort to prevent industrial action, South Korea's labor minister personally mediated intensive negotiations on Wednesday. Despite the government's intervention, management and union leaders remained far apart after the first day of talks.
Following the collapse of these negotiations, a strike is scheduled to begin Thursday. More than 47,000 workers are expected to join the action.
